Why Underage Cosmetic Surgery Is A Terrible Idea
At the Naravee Cosmetic Center in Thailand, we pride ourselves on being a reputable provider of plastic surgery treatments. However, we draw the line when it comes to the new trend of teenagers having cosmetic surgery simply to boost their self esteem. It is an especially big problem among teenage girls who feel insecure amid unreasonable media pressure to have ‘the perfect body’.
The worst part is that so-called global leading nations such as the UK have a largely unregulated cosmetic surgery industry which makes the problem even worse. Instead of undergoing therapy, British teens seem more likely to undergo cosmetic surgery in a bid to resolve issues that probably go far beyond aesthetics.
Liberation or Imprisonment?
The ‘Girl Power’ movement of the early part of the 21st century was supposed to empower young females but instead, it has trapped them within a bubble of vanity. Back in 2005, a popular girls’ magazine had a survey which found that 40% of teenage girls had considered cosmetic surgery. A quick look at the increase in popularity in plastic surgery within the last decade and it becomes clear that things are only getting worse.
The medical director of the British National Health Service asked for tougher controls over cosmetic surgery within the UK but the Government completely ignored his pleas. This suggests a complete lack of interest in regulating the industry in the United Kingdom; a number of other Western nations take a similar view.
In Thailand, these issues are taken very seriously. While cosmetic surgery can be a wonderful tool for people in need of reconstructive surgery and those seeking an anti-aging solution, it is not a cure-all. Above all, it should never be used as a means of ‘solving’ emotional issues because in this instance, it could actually make things worse. Ultimately, underage cosmetic surgery just for the sake of it is a terrible idea and is a trend that needs to be halted as soon as possible.
