Update 16/09/2018

Among the many attractions that you can find in Bangkok, perhaps the most well-known are the various temples found around the city. As a country steeped in Buddhist tradition, it is not surprising that there would be many Buddhist temples to visit in Thailand, but the temples found in Bangkok are truly a sight to behold. No trip to Bangkok would be complete without visiting at least one of them.

The most well-known and most important temple in all of Thailand is Wat Phra Kaew – Or Temple of the Emerald Buddha – Which is part of the Grand Palace complex in the center of Bangkok. It has stood for several centuries, having been constructed in 1785. The main attraction of this temple is the Emerald Buddha, which, despite its name, is actually carved out of jade instead of emerald. Wat Phra Kaew is open for visitors from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, with guided tours provided from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. There is a strict dress code when visiting this temple. You are not allowed to wear shorts, skirts, or sleeveless t-shirts. There is appropriate clothing provided at the temple if you need it.

Another well-known temple in Bangkok is Wat Pho, also known as The Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This temple is found behind Wat Phra Kaew, and is named for the large reclining Buddha statue found within the temple. The temple is regarded as the best schools for Thai massages, and massages are offered during your visit should you want one. Visiting hours are from 8 am to 5 pm, though massages are offered until 6 pm. Like Wat Phra Kaew, a strict dress code is in place concerning clothing that shows a lot of skin.

Wat Arun, also known as The Temple of the Dawn, is another well-known temple in Bangkok. Located in the Thonburi area of the city, this temple is situated on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. Unique in its design from other temples thanks to its spires, Wat Arun is one of the most popular temples in Bangkok to visit. It is a very old temple, having been constructed sometime during the Ayutthaya period (which lasted from 1351 to 1767). The temple has a strict dress code similar to Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho. Visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm.
