Scientific Research Shows That Cosmetic Surgery CAN Make You Happy
There is an erroneous belief that cosmetic surgery in Thailand is a shallow and ultimately meaningless pursuit of vanity. Yet a long-term scientific study published in the journal Clinical Psychological Science clearly showed that plastic surgery does improve self-esteem and leads to greater level of satisfaction in everyday life. The study was published on 11 March 2013 and investigated the psychological effects of cosmetic surgery on 544 patients.
The Point of the Research
It was the largest ever study on this particular issue and the aim was to find out if people who had plastic surgery were different from others; the study also looked to discover the goals set by patients. The 544 patients were compared with two groups: a group of 1,000 people who had no interest in getting cosmetic surgery and a second group with 264 people who had previously considered a cosmetic procedure but decided against it.
The volunteers were questioned four times in total: before surgery and 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery.
It was discovered that the plastic surgery patients had improved levels of self-esteem, had less anxiety, felt healthier and not only did they feel better about the area that had been operated on, they felt better about their entire body. It would appear that if you are happy with the outcome of the procedure, you will experience psychological benefits too.
If you are considering cosmetic surgery in Thailand at Bangkok’s Naravee Aesthetic Clinic, it is important to note that setting realistic expectations is the key to attaining happiness after the surgery. During the study, researchers used Goal Attainment Scaling which included questions that revealed a patient’s unrealistic expectations. It was found that only 12% of patients had these unrealistic expectations. This certainly shows the importance of discussing pre-surgery goals with your surgeon.
