Taking anti-inflammatory pain medications that the surgeon prescribes for you can also help keep the swelling down. In addition, these can have the added benefit of reducing the amount of pain you experience.

Eating soft foods for the first few days after the surgery is also a good idea. Breads, liquids, pudding, soft fruits, and other types of soft fruits that require little chewing are all good bets. Harder foods tend to require more chewing, and chewing too much during the first few days after the surgery can cause pain and swelling. However, while liquids may be a good choice, alcohol is not. Alcohol can thin your blood, which may have a negative impact on your recovery.

You may be prescribed an antibiotic designed to be pressed against your lips to prevent them from drying and/or cracking. If not, you may want to purchase lip moisturizer to help prevent dryness and cracking. When using it, however, it is important to apply it gently, and not to rub it in. Rubbing could cause you intense pain, and may damage your lips during the healing process.
